Spring Cleaning

Submitted by cheryl on Mon, 01/14/2008 - 07:23.

I hesitate to write this blog because it sounds self-pitying but that's not the case.  I was doing some January sorting and cleaning this afternoon in the basement and came across Jessica's First Communion dress.  It was stored in plastic but it still had some stains on the front from that big day about 25 years ago.  I washed it and hung it up to dry and it came out beautifully.  I had this overwhelming compulsion to make sure that some little girl would wear it this year.  I just kept going back to the laundry room and looking at it and marveling at how nice it came out and picturing someone being so happy to have it.  It occurred to me that my compulsion was due to the memory of my First Communion, I guess that would be about 55 years ago, yikes!  Anyway, the week before I still didn't have a dress to wear.  With 9 older sisters I guess whatever they wore was probably in shreds by then and I was worried about how Mom would come up with something.  Then one morning she told me we were borrowing a dress from the Murphy girl and she would have it at school.  When I got off the bus the nun handed me this bundle wrapped in tissue and told me it was from Caroline Murphy.  I was so relieved I had something to wear and stored it at my desk all day and when it came time to get on the bus after school I grabbed it and as I was walking down the steps I passed Caroline and she came up to me and said, and I quote, "Don't wrinkle it up so much."  That is why I want some little girl to have this dress - so she doesn't have to borrow one from somebody.

Where did it end up?

You never said who the dress ended up with. Or how you found them.

It's in Joliet

When I posted the blog, I had not determined where it would end up, just that it would hopefully be worn by someone. I called St. Elizabeth Center the next day and they said they would be glad to give it to some needy family. Before I dropped it off, Sharon called and said maybe her granddaughter would like to wear it. She tried it on and it was way too small so she donated it to her Church.
